Combustion Unit

The Thermal Combustion Unit is part of the North West Shelf Gas LNG Train 4 Project for Woodside Energy, located at Karratha, Western Australia.  The project is for the sole supplier to China's first LNG project in Guangdon Province and under a $25 billion deal, the venture will supply 3 Mt/a of LNG for 25 years to the Guangdon LNG Terminal and Trunk Line Project.

The Thermal Combustion Unit for the train 4 development is designed to dispose of the total quantity of vented gases from the Sulfinol acid gas stripping process.

Scope

This project consisted of the design, including Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling, engineering and manufacture of the Thermal Combustion Unit, together with an access stair tower, combustion air blower and gas fuel skid.

General Description

Thermal Combustion Unit is designed for the disposal and destruction of the vent gases which contain small quantities of hydrocarbons and other atmospheric pollutants received from the acid gas stripping equipment that must be destroyed before these gases are passed to the atmosphere.

The Thermal Combustion Unit is to operate continuously and comprises of a combustion chamber and a discharge stack.  The combustion chamber has an outside diameter of 4.94m with a length of 21m.  The discharge stack diameter reduces to an outside diameter of 3.35m, with the total height of these two sections when bolted together being 40.03m and having a total mass of approximately 250 tonnes (including refractory lining).

The Thermal Combustion Unit is fired via a Bloom / GCD baffle burner and gas train skid module consisting of all the necessary piping, valves and controls.  Stack EPA monitoring ports and TCU control thermocouples are accessed via an access stair tower.

CFD Analysis

At client request, GCD commissioned CFD analysis to prove tendered design.  The analysis successfully demonstrated the GCD design surpassed client requirements.

Control System

train

GCD International's designed gas fuel skid/valve train consists of all necessary piping, valves and controls to regulate all gases entering the vent.  It is housed in a robust steel frame providing a support for all piping and instrumentation.  It also includes an easy walkway for the operation, inspection and maintenance of all installed components
