SA Country Fire Service operates a training college located at Brukunga in the Adelaide Hills. The centre trains personnel for SA as well as interstate and overseas. Included in the extensive fire training facilities is the Compartment Fire Training Facility where training in the fighting of fires under conditions of constrained space, dense smoke and high radiation is conducted. This training is done within converted shipping containers where fires are established using particle board soaked in kerosene under controlled air conditions.
The Smoke Capture and Incineration equipment has been installed to address community concerns and successfully collect and treat the intermittent emissions of dense smoke generated during the training sessions lasting approximately 30 minutes each.

This was a novel application for a Thermal Oxidiser and includes a conical volute chamber to ensure even distribution of the smoke fumes and includes a Bloom Baffle Burner complete with a high temperature rated front refractory baffle, resistant to high temperature back radiation.
The valve train consists of all valves and controls necessary to regulate the LPG gas supply to the main flame and pilot burner. When the chamber is above a minimum operating temperature smoke is introduced to the oxidiser.
The electrical and burner management gas control system is fitted directly to the base of the Thermal Oxidiser. It provides a fully automated safe start-up routine with minimal operator interaction required. Once operating temperature has been reached smoke may be extracted from the training compartment.
The operator may change the extraction rate of smoke from the control panel or from a local pendant station located in front of the training compartment, allowing improved control during each burn.
