The Quality Heat Treatment Ammonia Dryer is designed to remove moisture from gaseous ammonia, supplied in cylinders prior to its use in a heat treatment cycle. TO ensure quality in depth and uniformity, during the nitriding cycle, the water content will have an effect on the operation of the fluid bed line. Sometimes the purity of this ammonia is not as specified by the gas supplier.
The project consisted of the design, engineering and manufacture of the ammonia dryer.

The Ammonia Dryer works on the absorption principle, where any traces of moisture are removed by the calcium oxide. The lower moisture levels in the gaseous ammonia will dramatically improve the nitriding surface treatments leading to deeper, more uniform layers and reduced consumption of ammonia..
The Ammonia Dyer comprised of two cylindrical dryer units which are mounted vertically and an in built control panel. The two cylinders are constructed from 316 stainless steel which will resist any possible corrosion from the ammonia gas. The cylinders are flanged at the top to allow easy access for the replacement of the calcium oxide.
Crushed calcium oxide, or sometimes referred to as lime oxide, is used as the main absorption material. When this material becomes saturated, the outlet moisture will rise. The calcium oxide must then be either regenerated (heated to 1000oC and air cooled) or replaced
Maximum flow 12m3/hr
Maximum inlet moisture level 5000 ppm
Outlet moisture level 500 ppm
Inlet pressure (max) 1000 kPa
Outlet pressure range 20 - 60kPa
The ammonia dryer is fitted with the two ammonia pressure regulators that will be used to reduce the inlet pressure of the ammonia gas. The safety relief valve is used to minimise the possibility of large amount of ammonia gas exiting the system at one time. The shut off valves are used to ensure that the gaseous ammonia or the purging nitrogen do not reverse flow. Pressure gauges, test points and ball valves have been installed in the dryer to achieve manual operation and control of the unit.
For maintenance purpose, a nitrogen purging system has been installed with gaseous ammonia being a harmful gas, nitrogen is passed through (at a set pressure) the main chambers before the lids are removed. The purged gas then exits via a vent, also located in the unit.
